Sustainability Transition

about

Unprecedented urbanization, industrialization and rapid economic growth in Asia are accompanied by environmental degradation, overconsumption of resources and various socio-economic problems, just to name a few, and these trends represent both challenges and threats to regional sustainability. The problems are interwoven in a complex manner, making it all the more important to adopt holistic approaches and have a full understanding of the linkages among global, human and social systems in order to identify effective solutions. The two-day International Conference provides an international and interdisciplinary forum to promote a deeper understanding of the emerging field of Sustainability Science and to discuss the transition towards sustainable societies. Distinguished speakers from Asia, Europe and Japan will argue roles, application and prospect of Sustainability Science, addressing the following specific subjects:

  1. Low Carbon Societies and Energy Use:
This session intends to provide insights into the linkages of policy and technology innovations towards de-carbonization, with a special focus on different initiatives in Europe and Asia.
  2. Resource-circulating Societies in Asia:
This session aims to address various aspects of resource circulation or integrated resources management, including the industrial strategies and policy initiatives to improve resource productivity, eco-efficiency, and dematerialization at different levels, particularly in the context of Asia.
  3. Land Use and Ecosystem Services:
This session refers to various strategies to minimize the impacts on the biosphere of land use in general and urbanization in particular as well as the different initiatives for sustainable urban-rural linkages.
  4. Bridging Science, Policies and Societies for Asian Sustainability:
Following the previous three sessions, this session reviews how science, policy and society should be interwoven to maximize the potential to promote sustainability in the context of Asia. In this session, participants also discuss how best to advance the emerging discipline of sustainability science through international cooperation and networking.
