| 要 旨 |
Setting land aside in protected areas is one of the leading methods used to protect biodiversity and natural habitats. Since the early 1960s the land area under protection has grown rapidly, and collectively such areas now constitute one of the major categories of land use worldwide. Despite the importance of the goal and the vast size of the land resource dedicated to it, there is little quantitative information on how well these areas perform in achieving their stated aims. Anecdotal information and limited statistical evidence indicates that host country governance institutions play a major role in determining success or failure. Even well-funded and well-intentioned efforts by multinational aid agencies or environmental NGOs can be stymied by host-nation corruption and/or instability. My talk will report on the design of, and very preliminary results from, a project to assess these governance effects. The goal of this work is to provide conservation agencies with a framework that will allow prediction of where conservation dollars will, or will not, achieve results. |
