RISS is composed of the Design House for Sustainability Science (Design House) and the Sustainability Science and Technology Development Laboratories (SST-Labs).

Design House

The Design House is the core of the institute and is composed of 2 units: the Scenario Design Unit for Sustainable Industrial Society (Scenario Unit) and the Strategy Unit for Science and Technology Development (Strategy Unit).
The Scenario Unit will formulate a comprehensive vision of the mid-term technological transition to sustainability, and organize and manage the research labs to meet concrete R&D targets. By outlining the shape of the society in which such mid-term goals are achieved, we will envision future scenarios through the backcasting approach, and design and select sustainable transition paths accordingly. We will also suggest the most suitable portfolio of technologies in view of their potential to achieve these transition paths. The Strategy Unit will identify a series of paths or roadmaps leading to the goals proposed by the Scenario Unit by combining the most important seeds from intramural and extramural research. With the collaboration of qualified researchers, this unit will support R&D and organize the SST-Labs in accordance with the defined strategy.

SST-Labs

The SST-Labs will be organized to carry out the R&D that follows the sustainability technology roadmap based on the key technology development proposed by the Design House.
